PREGNANT & GLUTEN FREE

Most of the year, 2019, I was pregnant. My first pregnancy was filled with joy, love, and excitement. It was also filled with food cravings and aversions. I could not stand the smell or taste of beef, especially ground beef. I would still make meals that included beef for others but I wouldn't even try it to make sure it tasted alright. I served them blindly.  Another food aversion was popcorn! The smell was just terrible, Someone could make popcorn the night before and the smell would still bother me! Thankfully both of these food aversions are gone as soon as my little one was born!

The first trimester was a rough one. I always felt nauseous, whether I had eaten or not. It became so bad that I could only drink water and cheerios. I would try and eat nuts such as almonds but even then I had to force myself. This caused me to end up in the emergency room around the second month of my pregnancy. I went in due to a terrible migraine. After an ultrasound, a blood draw, and a physical the doctors discovered I was very very dehydrated and malnourished. I was malnourished due to my own doing. Hardly eating for three weeks can cause anyone to be malnourished.

When the doctor came in, she administered two bags of fluids, nausea medication, and "forced" me to eat. She would not let me leave until I ate 10-15 almonds and some Cheerios. The doctor asked why I ate Cheerios and I told her that I was gluten free and couldn't eat Ritz Crackers. She told me that Cheerios are terrible for an individual, they are basically cardboard. I totally agree that cereal is not the best but when it's one of the only items you can stomach, you eat!

When it came to cravings I desired foods I haven't eaten in over ten plus years! I craved non-gluten free: lasagna, donuts, fries, donuts, pretzels, donuts... if you haven't figured it out I really desired non-gluten free donuts. The gluten free equivalent did not cut it, I CRAVED the "regular" items. I did not cave, I just fought the cravings off. Why, after over a decade did I desire GLUTEN, I mean out of everything I could want, it was something that was not even in my system.

Overall, I really hope that during future pregnancies I am able to eat more than Cheerios  and almonds, that I can eat beef and popcorn and that the craving for gluten does not show up!

What are some weird things that you have craved during a pregnancy? Has there been a food that you haven't had in forever that popped up in your mind that you just had to have?
